21st Century Learning

December 6, 2010

The Center for Public Education has a delightful way to illustrate 21st century learning. “How does all this fit together? Picture a sphere with many layers. The outer layer is competencies—broader skills like problem solving and teamwork—which often draw upon practical literacies, which in turn draw upon foundational or “core,” knowledge and skills.” The Center is an initiative of the National School Boards Association (NSBA).

The Partnership for 21st Century Skills uses an equally holistic illustration. P21 is a consortium of leaders from business, education, and government. Its goal has been to define and implement “a powerful vision for 21st century education to ensure every child’s success as citizens and workers”.

Finally, Dr. Bernie Trilling, Global Director of the Oracle Education Foundation, has distilled this rich graphic holism into a simple, easy-to-remember formulation.

The 7 C’s:

  • Critical thinking & problem solving
  • Creativity & innovation
  • Collaboration & teamwork
  • Cross cultural understanding
  • Communication & media fluency
  • Computing skills, ICT fluency
  • Life skills development
