52 McCaul
March 5, 2010
Three weeks ago tonight, a unique Prelude session took place at 52 McCaul here in downtown Toronto. This is a wonderful new multi-use hub for local and international art and events.
The session was unique on two counts. First, it brought together about 20 artists and designers to play Prelude. Second, not everyone knew each other. Usually individuals know each other in the groups playing.
The principal goal for the evening was to see how trained artists and designers might express themselves during the game. This involves the creation of several largely visual artefacts – iTags, weTags, and allTag. As well, the group wanted to provide an opportunity for Patrick Thompson, the Facilitator, to get more hands-on practice. He’s planning to introduce Prelude in his youth work with northern communities as well as in upcoming travels internationally.
The actual session was greatly enjoyed by participants and some remarkable tags were created. Please check out the Slideshow below. These vital photos were taken by Tobin Grimshaw, a renowned photographer. They clearly illustrate the graphic range of expression and inventiveness of the players.
The Facilitator
Patrick Thompson is known for pushing the boundaries of street art under the pseudonym Evoke throughout North and Central America, Europe, and Asia. His work has been shown in numerous exhibitions worldwide as well. Patrick is also one of those special artists who love to teach youth. He’s especially supportive of those in disadvantaged communities yearning to express themselves and to be affirmed . Patrick has been involved with Prelude since its inception.
