Say Something Nice

September 18, 2011

New surveys show employee stress levels are high and rising. Not surprisingly, workplace incivility is also growing proportionally.  The result is a direct decline in employee commitment. Emotions – positive and negative – are viral and contagious. The ripple effect is significant. Negative emotions are unhealthy. Positive emotions are life enhancing.

Many people worldwide are devoted to counteracting the growing tide of incivility. For example, The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation in the USA provides free online materials for schools and workplace use. It’s  part of the World Kindness Movement, which has 18 national member groups. Similarly, the Kitchener-Waterloo Community Foundation promotes ‘Kindness Day’.  In 2008, BBC Radio launched The One Million Random Acts of Kindness Campaign.

Finally it’s worth noting the effort to lighten people’s emotions by Improv Everywhere, “a New York City-based prank collective that causes scenes of chaos and joy in public places”.
