Slave Lake: Prelude & Life Skills
February 10, 2010
Northern Lakes College serves 30 communities in north central Alberta. The majority of its students are Aboriginal. This February staff member J.D. Szezepaniak introduced Prelude to first year students at Slave Lake Campus. J.D. is a Life Skills Coach and Readiness Coordinator. He began integrating Prelude into his program in the summer of 2009. He also introduced Prelude to the staff and council members of the Bigstone Cree Education Authority. These NLC first year students are in a 3-month program designed to foster problem-solving skills and self esteem through structured experiential learning. Throughout, students identify personal values, strengths and growth potential. More Prelude sessions with different satellite campuses will occur in the new few months.
